Beyond her Tweet in which she called ex-husband Bruce Jenner a “hero” for his decision to move forward with transitioning into a woman, Kris has kept fairly quiet on the subject.

However, Kathie Lee Gifford spoke up in Kris’ defense on Monday. A longtime friend of the Jenners, the Today host – along with her husband, Frank – is even a godparent to Kendall and Kylie.

During her 20/20 special, Sawyer said that Kris, 59, could not be reached for comment – a charge that the Kardashian-Jenner matriarch later denied on Twitter.

Whether or not that’s truly the case, “the other [wives], both fine women, had a long time to get used to this,” said Gifford, 61. “This was new to Kris. She’s trying to get her act together. She’s trying to be a good friend to him. Trying to still be a good parent. And it’s complicated in ways that we cannot even comprehend.”

Gifford also revealed that Bruce, 65, phoned her about a week before the interview aired to prepare her for what he was about to say. “I am grateful for that because we all want to know how to go forward,” she explained. “We all want to love him through this.”

Ultimately, said Gifford, there are a number of children involved “that have to learn how to deal with this” but that it’s important to “put love first and try to put yourself in someone else’s high heels, I suppose – Louboutins, in their case. The story isn’t over, obviously. The transition goes on.”

As a source previously told PEOPLE, the transition is indeed “an ongoing process. He is doing this in stages and very gradually and in a healthy way, but more and more, and certainly in private, he is living as a woman.”
