In a sneak peek at Sunday’s upcoming episode of I Am Cait, the exes get into quite the discussion about what exactly Caitlyn told Kris about being transgender back in the days when she was known as Bruce and the two were married.
The conversation takes place at the dinner table in front of all of Caitlyn’s pals, and it all starts out when Jennifer Boylan asks Kris if Caitlyn’s transition makes her question herself at all since the two were married for 23 years.
“No – I don’t know why, but it doesn’t,” Kris responds.
Then Boylan asks if Caitlyn told Kris “early on” about it, and that’s when the two exes start butting heads.
“No,” Kris says before Caitlyn interjects, looking irritated: “Oh, I did, too!”
“She keeps saying she told me but she didn’t,” Kris tells the group, before explaining her version of what Caitlyn (at the time known as Bruce) told her about her path to transition.
“What happened was a conversation in a driveway – he says to me: ‘Do you ever want to have more kids?’ And I said: ‘Ugh, God no!’ So he says: ‘Neither do I, that’s great – and I couldn’t have any more kids if I wanted to,’ ” Kris says.
“And I went: ‘Wait, what?’ ” Kris continues as the camera pans to Caitlyn, who doesn’t look pleased at all.
Kris goes on to say that according to her, Caitlyn did mention having taken something that would make it difficult to have children, but didn’t specify what.
“He goes: ‘Oh, jeez, you know, back in the ’80s, I messed around with this or that and it kind of screwed up my sperm count and you know, but whatever!’ ” Kris says. “It could have been steroids for all I knew, ’cause he was an athlete. He never said estrogen, he just said: ‘I took some s— in the ’80s.’ I mean, whatever word. There was no: ‘I am transgender.’ It was: ‘I took some stuff in the ’80s, and my sperm isn’t good.’ ”
Caitlyn then steps in and defends herself: “I said I had a condition that I’d been dealing with forever, I said that I was on hormones, and that’s the reason it might be tough to get pregnant.”
Again, Caitlyn disagrees, maintaining she “certainly told [Kris] what was going on,” before acknowledging in an on-camera confessional that clearly, the two don’t see eye-to-eye here.
“My version of what happened at the beginning is obviously very different than her version,” Caitlyn says.

Kris and Caitlyn have long told different versions of what exactly Kris knew about Caitlyn’s path to transition: In an interview with Vanity Fair last June, Kris said she knew her then-husband cross-dressed but didn’t realize Caitlyn wanted to transition into a woman.
“When I met Bruce, he told me that he had done hormones back in the early ’80s,” Kris, 60, said. “This was a conversation that took place in the early ’90s. So, what he was telling me happened a decade earlier, and he never really explained it.”
“Nobody mentioned a gender issue,” she added. “Somebody mentioned that at one point in his life he liked to dress up.”
Caitlyn, meanwhile, maintained she was “very honest” with Kris in a video for the Makers Conference in California in February, explaining that when the two first met, Caitlyn was on hormones making her first attempt to transition.
“We hit it off from day one,” Caitlyn said. “I was very honest with her – I had to be, I was a 36B [cup].”
Caitlyn, who then got off hormones and got her breasts removed, went on to marry Kris in 1991 and said the two set some ground rules.
According to Caitlyn: “The rules, kind of, with Kris and I [were]: ‘Don’t dress up, certainly around the house, if you really need to do that, when you’re on the road take stuff and do that.’ So I did that for years.”
Last month, though, Caitlyn admitted she might not have been as open about her path to transition as she would have hoped.
“Everybody has a different interpretation of what happened, but I was, I thought, probably very honest with her at the beginning, when we first met 25 years ago,” Caitlyn said during an interview at E!’s international press junket.
“Now did I probably downplay it? Absolutely,” continued Caitlyn, 66. “Did I ever think eventually it would come to where I am today? No.”
