After years of tension, all appears to be well between Kourtney Kardashian and Scott Disick.

In PEOPLE’s exclusive sneak peek at Sunday’s episode of Keeping Up with the Kardashians, the exes sit down to discuss where they stand after a trip to New York City with the kids in September — their first trip as a family in almost two years.

“I had fun,” says Disick, 35. “I feel like we haven’t been to New York together in forever. Well, we haven’t really gone anywhere together in a long time.”

Disick and Kardashian, 39, ended their nine-year relationship in July 2015 but continue to co-parent sons Mason, 9, Reign, 4, and daughter Penelope, 6. Since their split, they’ve endured several ups and downs as Disick went through waves of late-night partying and bad behavior, which included a tense trip to Costa Rica in January 2017.

“Obviously I said after Costa Rica that you weren’t ever coming on a family trip again — I think that’s when I put the kibosh on the family trips,” Kardashian tells him.

“Yeah. I mean, I don’t think I was in the best place but I feel like you and I also weren’t in the best place,” Disick acknowledges. “You were living your life the way you should be and I just wasn’t ready to handle it. I feel like the biggest thing that you and I have always talked about — that you wanted from me, if there was anything — was just to see me consistent with you and my family. It’s been over a year of consistency and I feel like we’re good. Our parenting’s been better, the kids are better.”

“We’ve always said that we were going to try to be family,” he adds. “Obviously it didn’t work out perfect, but this is as close as we can get.”

Kardashian admits that her past with Disick has “always been complicated” but says their trip to N.Y.C. has left her feeling “excited.”

“It’s really nice to see how much Scott has grown and how much he’s invested in really being a great dad to the kids,” she says.

In fact, things are going so smoothly that Kardashian decides to invite Disick on a trip to Bali, which the famous family took last fall. Her only hesitation? She doesn’t want to send any “mixed messages.”

“Mixed messages with what? You’re giving me a mixed message? I’m in a full relationship,” responds Disick, who has been dating Sofia Richie, 20, for about a year and a half.

“I know that. But I’m just saying I don’t ever want you to think I’m giving a mixed message,” Kardashian insists.

“You barely give a regular message,” Disick says with a laugh.
