Kim Richards Talks About Struggles with Alcohol: 'I've Always Loved Sobriety'
"I really wanted to go to treatment because I needed a break from what I was going through at home," the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills star says
Kim Richards addressed her issues with alcohol abuse and sobriety in an interview Wednesday with Entertainment Tonight. The reality star also talked about her infamous Dr. Phil interview and the night of her arrest at the Beverly Hills Hotel.
“I love sobriety,” the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills star, 50, said in the interview. “I’ve always loved sobriety, and relapsing was very hard for me. It was not easy. I have to say, don’t take this wrong, but I really wanted to go to treatment because I needed a break from what I was going through at home.”
Richards added that she felt like family stress played a role in her relapse, revealing that her ex-husband and son were sick, she had to give her dog away, and her sister, Kyle Richards, was not speaking to her.
Last month, PEOPLE reported that she left rehab for the second time this year – completing the program this time around. She is 30 days sober, ETreports.
“I went in and I got to learn a whole lot about myself,” Richards said. “I dug deep into my past, things that happened to me as a child, good and bad, teenage years, relationships with all my loved ones, where they need to be mended, where they’re very powerful. I worked on me.”
The Bravo star entered rehab after a public arrest at the Beverly Hills Hotel on April 16. Richards was reportedly being belligerent, refused to leave the hotel’s restaurant and locked herself in the restroom. She was charged with public intoxication and trespassing. She was also charged with resisting arrest and battery of a police officer after reportedly kicking an officer in the left once in custody.
“My arrest was my ‘A-ha, I get to go away now and rest and take a break from all this.’ I don’t want anybody to take this wrong, but I truly needed a break from hospitals, family, the pressure. I needed to go away,” Richards told ET.
Just days before entering rehab, she was uncomfortable with Dr. Phil’s questions about her arrest and left the show mid-interview. The cameras followed Richards and her children back to her hotel room, where the family tried for a more private intervention.
Her recent stay in rehab was her fourth in a year. She left one time in May, checking out to attend daughter Brooke Brinson’s wedding. However, the television star skipped out on her niece Nicky Hilton’s recent nuptials.
“I decided to stay in treatment,” she told ET.
Richards revealed that she has yet to speak with producers about her return to Real Housewives of Beverly Hills as she’s been focusing on treatment and getting well, but she reports that Bravo has spoken to her representative and they have asked her back.
