Kim Richards‘ ex-husband Monty Brinson has died, a source confirms to PEOPLE.

“Kim is devastated,” says the source.

Brinson was married to Richards from 1985-88. A year after they married, the two welcomed their daughter, Brooke, who is now 29.

After their divorce Brinson and Richards remained close friends, particularly in recent years as the former Real Housewives of Beverly Hills star, 51, took care of her ailing ex, who suffered from cancer.

Brinson, for his part, supported Richards throughout her struggle with addiction and brushes with the law.

In recent months, Richards and Brinson also celebrated their respective birthdays together.

“Having you here Monty is the best give of all,” Richards captioned a picture of them with their arms around each other on her birthday in September. “I love you so much.”

On Brinson’s birthday a few weeks later, Richards dedicated another heartfelt post to her ex on Instagram.

“Monty … Happy BD Star light, Star bright, first Star I see Every night … Always know your (sic) in My Heart,” she wrote. “I love you so much. We have come so far , let’s keep it going .I’m right by your side forever! I wish for you happiness ,courage , peace ,laughter ,love , strength and Every you’ve EVER DREAMED OF!!!!”

Brinson had lung cancer, and in November 2014 Richards’ close friend and former RHOBH costar Brandi Glanville told PEOPLE he had developed “a tumor in his brain.”

“They can’t operate on it, so they’re going to do some radiation and steroid treatment to try to shrink it,” Glanville, 42 said. “He is the sweetest soul. You can’t help but love Monty. He’s always kind to everyone across the board. He’s a good solid guy.”

As for Richards, Glanville described the reality star as Brinson’s “ride or die.”

“She’s right next to him. And she’s taking care of him,” Glanville said.

In December, Brinson took to Instagram to update fans on his condition and inform them that while he would be spending Christmas in the hospital, he didn’t plan on letting that get in the way of a celebration.

“I’m fighting I’m not a quitter and no matter what you go through don’t be a quitter,” he wrote. “So I will be celebrating Christmas in the hospital this year. Tomorrow I’m going to get Christmas Tree sent to my room and celebrate life. Then I’m going to decorate my room like a fine resort. I’m going to make the best of it.”

He continued, “I’ll try to get back to phone calls and messages when able. I’ll be fine and o (sic) would like to thank everyone from all around the world for the prayers and emails I received,, it made my heart stronger and I’ve felt that much love in my heart. And My friends family I thankful for everything , love to each and everyone of you i don’t know how my story will end but I know I’ve been loved all my life and I’ve loved back just as hard to make others happy In my life.
