Kim Kardashian Knows 'Some People Are Laughing at Her' for Becoming a Lawyer: Source

A source tells PEOPLE that Kim Kardashian "realizes that some people are laughing at her, but she really doesn't care"

She’s said it herself: Kim Kardashian West loves to be underestimated.

Kardashian West, 38, recently revealed that she’s studying to become a lawyer, announcing that she decided last summer to begin a four-year apprenticeship with a law firm in San Francisco, with the goal of taking the bar in 2022.

She’s weathered her fair share of ridicule ever since, but she’s not letting that stop her, a source tells PEOPLE.

“Kim realizes that some people are laughing at her for the lawyer thing, but she really doesn’t care,” says the source. “She is focused that this is what she wants to do, and she’s going to do it, regardless of what people think.”

According to the source, the soon-to-be mother of four is “extremely well-suited to be an attorney.”

“She has a fantastic memory. She can process multiple things at once,” says the source. “She’s great at multitasking and at time management. She can grasp very complex concepts. She has a very strong sense of what she believes, and is extremely persuasive. She’s also a very hard worker.”

That’s not the first we’ve heard of her skills in the legal arena: Her attorney Mike Kump once praised the star for having “perfect instincts” and “great judgment.”

“Kim more than holds her own in discussions of religion, politics, law,” continues the source. “She is extremely well-informed. She knows what’s going on in the world.”

The source also says she has her husband Kanye West‘s full support.

“Kanye is Kim’s biggest cheerleader about becoming a lawyer, and he thinks she’d be an amazing one,” says the source. “He’s 100 percent supportive of her. He checks in with her all the time to see how the studying is going, if there’s anything she needs, how he can help. He wants her to follow her passions. He thinks she’ll be a fantastic lawyer.”

“Kanye has been cheering her on since she started looking into law. He was there every step of the way for the Alice Johnson situation,” continues the source. (Last year, Kardashian West successfully petitioned President Donald Trump to commute the life sentence of Alice Marie Johnson, a nonviolent drug offender.)

The source says the Keeping Up with the Kardashians star “believes that she’s been gifted with a very tall platform, and that she needs to use it to do some good in the world.”

And West “is on the same page,” the source says, adding that the famous couple has a “very interesting dynamic.”

“They really inspire each other to follow their passions,” the source says. “Even if they disagree about the particulars, they both agree that each other should do what they think is right. When Ye came out as a Trump supporter, Kim didn’t necessarily agree with everything, but she loved his passion about him. She loved seeing how much he lit up when he’d talk about politics. And he does the same thing for her.”

“In many ways, they’d make a fantastic political couple,” the source adds. “They are so unified when it comes to doing things greater than themselves. They’re working towards more than just their brands.”

Kardashian West herself has made a point to shut down trolls mocking her ambitions.

“I’ve seen some comments from people who are saying it’s my privilege or my money that got me here, but that’s not the case,” she wrote on Instagram earlier this week. “One person actually said I should ‘stay in my lane.’ I want people to understand that there is nothing that should limit your pursuit of your dreams, and the accomplishment of new goals. You can create your own lanes, just as I am.”

“The state bar doesn’t care who you are,” she added. “Everyone can take this route if you live in a state where this is allowed.”

Though she did attend Pierce College in Los Angeles for some time, she never graduated. However, California, as well as three other U.S. states, offer a path to passing the bar without attending law school by “reading the law,” or apprenticing with a practicing lawyer or judge. If Kardashian West passes the “baby bar” this summer, she will be given the okay to continue for three more years of study.

In a recent interview with Vogue, Kardashian West said the hardest part of the process so far has been the reading: “It’s so time-consuming,” she said. “The concepts I grasp in two seconds.”

She also said she loves to prove people wrong when it comes to their assumptions about her.

“I love to be put in a situation where I can have a conversation with someone who might not be inclined to think much of me,” she said. “Because I can guarantee they will have a different opinion and understand what’s important to me after they’ve met me.”
