Khloé Kardashian knows that life isn’t always perfect, but she won’t let tough times get her down.

“Not every day is skip and rainbows, but that’s real life,” Kardashian, 34, who often uses her social media accounts to share inspirational quotes, tells PEOPLE. “It’s okay to fail, but you can’t let those bad things define you.”

It’s been a whirlwind year for Kardashian, who gave birth to daughter True on April 12, 2018, and then split with her boyfriend, basketball player Tristan Thompson, after multiple cheating scandals.

Still, the reality star, whose clothing brand Good American inspired the famed Good Squad — featuring activists and role models of body positivity — says she focuses on joy, something she also aims to pass on to True.

“It’s hard,” she admits. “It’s okay to protect yourself, but you can be warm and fuzzy at the same time. At the end of the day, the bad things really do shape us and make us who we are.”

And when it comes to Good American, which launches their summer collection on Friday, Kardashian says she’s grateful to be a part of a brand that celebrates all women.

“I don’t want anybody to be a cookie cutter shape or size,” she says. “And not everybody wants to be a size 2, believe it or not.”

Adds Kardashian: “I want people to live a healthy and happy life, and that’s the message I want to project to my daughter. Be active, and do something that makes your heart happy.”
