Khloé Kardashian Files for Divorce from Lamar Odom for Second Time: She 'Was Waiting for the Timing to Be Right,' Says Source
She first filed for divorce in 2013
The Keeping up with the Kardashians star filed on Thursday, citing irreconcilable differences, according to court documents obtained by PEOPLE.
The two wed in 2009, just one month after meeting. Kardashian first filed for divorce in December 2013 after he relapsed with his substance abuse problems and cheated, however she called off their protracted divorce following Odom’s near-fatal overdose last October.
“This was always the plan. The divorce has never been officially off. Khloé was waiting for the timing to be right,” a source tells PEOPLE of Kardashian’s filing.
Kardashian, 31, provided both emotional and financial support for Odom, 36, in the months following his hospitalization, staying day and night by his hospital bedside, making sure he received the best medical treatment and helping him move into a leased home in the same gated community as her as he continued to recover.
“She was loyal for a long time and taking care of him, but she’s not a babysitter and needs to move on with her life,” a second source tells PEOPLE.
A source close to the Kardashian family adds that the KUWTK star made the decision “some time ago.”
“She’s honestly fine and it’s more of a formality at this point,” says the source. “She’s there for him and they’re in regular contact and she wishes him well. She’ll always be there for him. But as far as their marriage is concerned, that’s over and has been for quite some time. It was time to make it official.”
As for Odom, the divorce filing was not a surprise, says a Kardashian insider.
“Khloé told Lamar,” the insider says. “He wasn’t blindsided. He knew it was coming. It was amicable.
The insider says Kardashian will continue to support Odom financially, but that there is nothing romantic between them.
“Khloé cares about Lamar and he’ll always be in her life,” says the insider. “But there is only so much you can do for a person. You can’t help or fix someone who won’t fix themselves.”
Just days before Kardashian filed for divorce, Odom was lending a helping hand to NBA player Quincy Pondexter’s Amateur Athletic Union program for children in Fresno, California, where he worked with the kids on their basketball skills.
“He wanted to be apart of it and he wanted to be in the gym,” Pondexter told The Fresno Bee May 21. “It’s been a blessing to see him in here working with the kids.”
In March, Odom spent time with Kardashian and her family, but after he was spotted drinking at a bar with friends, a source told PEOPLE Kardashian was “very worried about Lamar and his behavior but Lamar refuses to listen to her.”
Kardashian admitted she held out hope for the future of their relationship, but said they would need to start over fresh if something were to happen between them.
“We’re definitely getting out of this marriage, because it’s been a little tainted. We need to cut our ties, and we can figure it back out,” she told Odom.
