The former Gossip Girl actress is joining Jane the Virgin as a high-profile publisher who hires Jane (Gina Rodriguez) as her second assistant on the CW dramedy, PEOPLE can reveal exclusively. Rutherford will first appear in the sixth episode of the show’s upcoming third season and even though she’s currently listed as a guest star, the actress potentially could be come a recurring character. The 47-year-old most recently guest-starred on ABC’s Quantico as the secretly alive mother of Shelby (Johanna Braddy). Season 3 of Jane will also see the title character finally enter non-virgin territory. “[Jane] does lose her virginity this year,” show creator Jennie Snyder Urman told Entertainment Weekly in September. “It’s in the first half of the season, and it’s quite a big episode for us.” Season 2 of the CW dramedy ended with Jane finally marrying Michael (Brett Dier). But with Michael shot in the final moments of the finale, will Rafael (Justin Baldoni) swoop in to comfort a grieving Jane? Or will a new man be introduced in a flash-forward? There’s just no telling who Jane loses her virginity to. “There’s obviously a lot of tension and question marks over that,” Urman told the magazine. Regardless of whom Jane sleeps with, Rodriguez says it will have a major impact on her character. “How is [losing her virginity] going to play into her life, her psychology, how she views herself and how she views her intimacy?” Rodriguez said. “There’s an evolution.” Season 3 of Jane the Virgin premieres Oct. 17 on the CW.
