"She would joke that, no matter what, I should always get 10 percent less than she got," says Griffin of discussing the show with Joan Rivers

If Kathy Griffin takes over Joan Rivers‘s gig as co-host on E!’s Fashion Police when the show returns in January, she won’t be making as much as the iconic comedian – at least not if the late comedian gets her way.

“Ironically, she and I talked about it many times,” Griffin told PEOPLE, of having previously chatted with Rivers about the possibility of her joining the show. “She would joke that, no matter what, I should always get 10 percent less than she got.”

Earlier this month, Griffin revealed she’d been offered the job following the 81-year-old comedian’s death in September, but was thinking it over – and apparently, she’s still thinking.

“It’s definitely something that I’ve put a lot of thought into,” she says. “Obviously there is an emotional tie for me because Joan was such a good friend of mine, a close friend, truly a mentor – but also a legit friend. We talked about everything, and we joked about everything on the table, so it’s something that I’ve been thinking about for a while and I think it’s something they’ve been thinking about too.”

The comedian jokes that she actually has years of experience on Fashion Police already. “I have been a fashion ‘don’t’ for years!” says Griffin. “I used to actually laminate my ‘What Was She Thinking?’ pictures and put them on my refrigerator, but they then covered the entire wall. I am not afraid to be a ‘do’ or a ‘don’t.’ We’ll see what happens.”
