McKinnon would also make history as the first woman on SNL to play a president. “I had not thought about it in those terms until this moment,” she told Rolling Stone on Monday. “Not my involvement in it, but just – what’s that moment gonna be like? How hard are we gonna cry? I could cry just thinking about how hard we’re gonna cry when it happens.” The 32-year-old became the regular Clinton impersonator on SNL in early 2015, around the time when Clinton announced her presidential campaign. “I freaked out at the enormity of the task, yes,” she said. “It really gets ratcheted up another notch when politics is involved. Progress, real progress, makes me cry harder than anything, when the world itself grows.” McKinnon and Clinton also appeared in a skit together in October 2015. The memorable moment found McKinnon’s Clinton getting consoled by a bartender played by the real Secretary of State. Before McKinnon, Parks and Recreation star Amy Poehler portrayed the former first lady. McKinnon’s emotions got the best of her again when she found out she’d been cast on SNL, becoming the first openly lesbian cast member in the history of the long-running show. Since starring on the sketch-comedy series, McKinnon’s career has taken off. She appeared in this year’s Ghostbusters reboot alongside Melissa McCarthy and Kristen Wiig. In August, the comedienne told PEOPLE that before her gig at SNL, she’d been “destitute, unemployed, living in L.A. – which I hate.” “Thank god that I got to have that job, because I’m not qualified for anything else,” McKinnon added. “I have no skills. I’m bad at most things.” McKinnon currently stars in SNL‘s 42nd season, opposite Alec Baldwin, who’s portraying Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump.
