Khloé Kardashian had long worried that her estranged husband Lamar Odom might hit rock bottom after battling his demons for years.

When Odom, 35, was found unresponsive in a Nevada brothel on Oct. 13, she responded with shock, sadness and a steely determination to help him.

“This is exactly what she feared,” a source close to the reality TV star tells PEOPLE in this week’s issue.

As he continues to fight for recovery after being moved to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, those closest to him are hoping that the crisis represents a turning point in Odom’s life, which has been marked by tragedy repeatedly.

“Everyone is hoping that this will be a reality check for him,” says the source, “and that he will make a change in his life and be the man he was created to be.”
