Ellen DeGeneres raised Josh Groban up – right up out of his seat, in fact.

In a clip from Tuesday’s Ellen DeGeneres Show, the singer gets quite the fright in the middle of an interview when a staffer pops out of what looked like an ordinary coffee table.

Coincidentally, Groban’s gasp-inducing moment came not long after he told DeGeneres of singing the “Star-Spangled Banner” at the Kentucky Derby that “it’s good to be scared.”

Before the shock, Groban gushed to DeGeneres about his “brilliant and funny” girlfriend Kat Dennings. The singer, who’s set to embark on a tour later this year, also couldn’t resist blowing a kiss at a picture of himself with the 2 Broke Girls star that appeared on a screen behind himself and DeGeneres, 57.

When asked if he’s okay with the fact that Dennings, 28, outed him as a nerd, Groban said, “Yes, I think that was outed long ago.”

He added, “That’s been out there since at least sixth grade.”

Groban, 34, said that their shared geek status has brought them closer together as a couple: “Humor is such a huge thing for me, so, you know, the fact that we could talk about Monty Python and all sorts of weird other things, I was like, ‘Okay yeah, we’re on the same page.’ ”

Dennings’ 2 Broke Girls costar Beth Behrs, 29, who introduced the couple before they started dating in October 2014, previously told PEOPLE her pals are “both nerds at heart.”

So there you have it: The couple that nerds out together stays together.
