Newly single Jon Hamm has been spotted for the first time since his split from actress Jennifer Westfeldt after 18 years together.

The actor, 44, was seen grabbing dinner with two friends at Little Dom’s restaurant in Los Angeles on Thursday.

One of the guys offered Hamm a friendly hug before the buddies sat down to catch up over a meal.

The dinner outing comes just four days after Hamm and Westfeldt confirmed exclusively to PEOPLE that they had ended their relationship.

“With great sadness, we have decided to separate, after 18 years of love and shared history,” the couple told PEOPLE in a joint statement on Monday. “We will continue to be supportive of each other in every way possible moving forward.”

Hamm and Westfeldt began dating in 1997 and starred together in the 2011 film Friends with Kids.

After the breakup, a source who worked closely with the former Mad Men star told PEOPLE that Westfeldt had been more like a manager or a mother to Hamm than a girlfriend, taking care of him and supporting him during difficult times. Indeed, Hamm credited his former love for her support after he completed rehab for alcohol abuse earlier this year.

The source added that Hamm “always had demons and needed a mother figure in is life” and that it was “generally assumed that they would break up once he got sober because he didn’t need to lean on her to take care of him so much.”

Another source told PEOPLE Hamm is upset but is working through the pain by going out with his guy friends, adding that the split happened almost three weeks ago.
