John Stamos Reflects on Hitting a New Career Resurgence After Publicly Enduring 'Rough Patches'
"I m really grateful for this moment that's happening right now," John Stamos told PEOPLE at the TV Land Icon Awards
Nothing like a handful of hit shows and a lifetime achievement award to cause you to take stock of how far you’ve come.
On Sunday, John Stamos was honored with the Timeless Icon Award at the taping of the TV Land Icon Awards. Speaking to PEOPLE on the red carpet, Stamos said his recent career resurgence has helped him realize just how difficult his recent “rough patches” were.
With more than three decades of on-camera experience under his belt, Stamos has seen his fair share of highs and lows, and now he has a unique perspective as he takes in both his accomplishments and his more trying times.
“I’ve got to be honest,” he told PEOPLE from the red carpet, “you don’t really know you weren’t doing so well until things are going really well. It’s like, ‘Wow, this is different.’ I never knew I was doing so s—–.”
Looking back, Stamos says he couldn’t have made it through without his friends and family.
“I’ve been through some rough patches and these people, my friends and family, have really stuck by me and cared about me and loved me,” he said.
His friends and family also attended the award ceremony to support him, including Garry Marshall, the Beach Boys, Dave Coulier, Lori Loughlin, Josh Peck, Paget Brewster and his sisters with his nieces and nephews.
The TV Land Icon Awards air Sunday at 9 p.m. ET on TV Land.
