It depends who you ask: John Stamos says their Disney outing was definitely a date while Lori Loughlin is not so sure

Jesse and Becky fans are just not letting this go.

The most dedicated Full House followers have always wished that John Stamos and Lori Loughlin would get together in real life, as their characters did on the family sitcom. “John and I had so much fun together, but even I am like, ‘Why are people so obsessed with these two?’ ” Loughlin previously told PEOPLE.

And while their timing was never quite right to get together off camera – she was married when he was single, he was with Rebecca Romijn when she was divorced – there’s always been some confusion as to whether ever they dated in real life. And the answer is well, it depends on who you ask.

PEOPLE spoke to both Loughlin (who’s been married to second husband Mossimo Giannulli for 18 years) and Stamos (currently single) for this week’s cover story about the upcoming Netflix spinoffFuller House to get to the bottom of whether there was a spark between them.

The two were friends as young actors, working on daytime soaps long before Full House, Loughlin explains. As teenagers, “He asked me to go to Disneyland to see a band,” she tells PEOPLE.

In a romantic way?

“We fight internally about that,” she says with a laugh. “I’m like, ‘Was that a date?’ He’s like, ‘Yeah!’ ”

“As I recall, we ended up kissing,” Stamos tells PEOPLE. “That sounds like a date, right?”

Fuller House debuts Feb. 26 on Netflix.
