Jimmy Fallon is known for his sarcastic “thank you” notes, but there was no snark in his emotional tribute to Jay Leno Monday.

“For carrying on the proud tradition of The Tonight Show host with such humor and class, and for being nothing but gracious and generous to me over the past years,” Fallon began, “I will do my best to make you proud, every night. Thank you.”

“I think you’ll do a great job,” Leno responded. Leno’s last night of filming The Tonight Show will be Thursday.

Things will come full circle that night: One of Leno’s last guests will be Billy Crystal, who was his first-ever guest in 1992.
