Jazz Jennings isn’t out of surgery, but her parents are keenly aware that she’s not completely out of the woods.

In an exclusive sneak peek at Wednesday’s I Am Jazz, the transgender teen has completed the hormone-blocking procedure, and a doctor gives the Jennings a status update – an implant partially broke, but he was able to recover it, and Jazz still runs the risk of infection (though it’s unlikely, according to the surgeon’s experience).

And then it’s time to wait.

“I don’t like seeing her like that,” says mom Jeanette, her voice catching as she watches Jazz, 14, gently snoring.

Dad Greg agrees: “I’d rather not see my kid like this.”

Jeanette continues, “Do you see why I wanted to be here when she’s like this? You know, when she comes out of this, she’s in a deep state. The first person I want her to see is her mom and her dad.”

Indeed, Greg and Jeanette are ready to move past their overwhelming fear about post-surgical flare-ups and see their daughter as they know and love her – "awake and smiling".

I am Jazz airs Wednesdays (10 p.m. ET) on TLC.
