Jazz Jennings Heads Into Gender Confirmation Surgery as Mom Gets Emotional: 'Now, I Have a Girl'
The 18-year-old transgender reality star's life-changing surgery will unfold on Tuesday's episode of I Am Jazz
In PEOPLE’s exclusive sneak peek at Tuesday’s episode of I Am Jazz, the 18-year-old transgender reality star is joined by her parents and siblings in the final moments before being wheeled off to the operating room.
“Having my whole family with me throughout this entire journey has been so important,” Jazz says. “From the beginning they have just provided me with unconditional love and support and the fact that they’re here on this day just signifies that we’ve come so, so far since the beginning of this journey. This is really the final step, this is the final transition, and I’m so glad that I have them by my side.”
“There are no words to describe how incredible this moment is,” she continues. “I feel like I have been envisioning this day my entire life and now it is finally happening and it’s just so surreal that it’s all occurring right here, right now.”
Emotions are running particularly high for Jazz’s mom Jeanette, who reflects on giving birth to a child who was born male yet identifies as female.
“There’s a tiny bit of, ‘Wow, I gave birth to this little boy and the last reminder of that will be gone,’ ” Jeanette says. “But that’s okay, it’s just weird. It’s just like, you know, she was born — ‘it’s a boy!’ Now, I have a girl. And I’m thrilled for her, because look at how happy she is.”
“I’m just overwhelmed that it’s happening. I don’t want her to see me like this,” she continues, choking up in the hallway outside the room. “This is a huge thing, she waited for this for so long and it’s here and I’m just happy for her.”
I Am Jazz airs Tuesdays (9 p.m. ET) on TLC.
