Art is about to imitate life for Rick Fox.

The actor and retired basketball star has been cast as – you guessed it! – a retired basketball star named Calvin Owens in season 2 of the CW’s supernatural comedy iZombie.

Fox, 46, tells PEOPLE he is “thrilled to be joining this great ensemble.”

The hit show follows Liv Moore (Rose McIver) an undead coroner’s assistant who solves crimes by eating the brains of murder victims and using their memories to crack the case.

So how does Fox’s character fit into season 2?

Detective Clive Babineaux ((Malcolm Goodwin) and Liv “meet Calvin at the wake of Calvin s college buddy, Harry Cole, a degenerate gambler murdered in front of Clive on the King County Courthouse steps. Calvin was one of the last people to see his friend Harry alive,” according to the network.

Fox played for the Boston Celtics and Los Angeles Lakers before hanging up his jersey in 2004. His acting credits include Sharknado 3, Dope, Ugly Betty and One Tree Hill.

iZombie season 2 premieres Oct. 6 at 9 p.m. ET on the CW.
