Ian Ziering is thrilled for his former Beverly Hills, 90210 castmates who have signed on for the CW’s spin-off series … but he’s equally thrilled not to be joining them.

“It’s not really where my career goals are focused right now,” Ziering, who played Steve Sanders on the runaway ’90s hit show, told PEOPLE Saturday at Boost Mobile’s BBQ at Project Beach House in Malibu. “I’m really looking down the line pretty far and this might be a step backwards.”

But that doesn’t mean the 44-year-old actor … who’s turned his attention to producing a MySpace TV series and will next act in National Lampoon’s 301: The Legend of Awesomest Maximus Wallace Leonidas later this month–is any less nostalgic for the years he spent playing Sanders.

“You know, Steve Sanders lives on in our hearts and in our minds,” says Ziering.

The CW’s 90210 remake premieres Sept. 2, and producers managed to lure back Jennie Garth and Shannen Doherty. Ziering says he wishes the cast — and the show — well.

“I think that it’s fantastic they’re trying to recapture some of the excitement that 90210 brought to a decade,” says Ziering. “I wish them all the best of luck.” –Sara Hammel
