Oh, what a difference five years makes!

PEOPLE can exclusively premiere a First Look at NBC’s upcoming reboot Heroes Reborn, which finds many familiar faces from Heroes in the midst of a dangerous crisis – or, as creator Tim Kring puts it: “They are persecuted and hunted.”

Two of Heroes‘ heroes, Claire Bennet (Hayden Panettiere) and Peter Petrelli (Milo Ventimiglia), are gone, and others who remain feel that the Evos – evolved humans with special powers – “cannot be trusted,” including newcomer Zachary Levi‘s “badass … really dark” vengeance seeker Luke Collins.

H.R.G. (Jack Coleman) is among the many familiar faces seen in the First Look, including returning favorite Masi Oka, who describes the new series as a sort of “passing of the torch,” and Greg Grunberg, who makes an aptly powerful pitch for the reboot: “This is Heroes like you’ve never seen it before. This is Heroes on steroids.”
