Harry Connick Jr. Gives the Best Idol Audition Ever (VIDEO)
Looks like someone’s excited about the new season of American Idol!
Connick sang Sia’s “Chandelier,” prompting a laughing Urban to say, “You did it! You hit the note.”
The judges spent the summer auditioning a new crop of aspiring singers for the 14th season, but this time they took a different approach to narrow down the group of 48 hopefuls down to 24.
In an effort to separate the more seasoned performers from those that need a little more time to grow, the 48 finalists were sent to the House of Blues in Los Angeles to audition with a live band in front of the club’s audience.
“For me, it was a really important part of the process, because in years past we’ve seen them in these various audition environments, and then they go straight to the TV studio in front of a live audience,” Urban said in a recent Idol press call. “I really wanted to see what they’re like in front of a club setting. Can they perform, do they know how to perform live, do they know how to move and connect with an audience? So that was a really telling environment to have them in, and I’m glad that we got to do that.”
American Idol returns Jan. 7 on Fox.
