Black-ish has a new guest star!

Hamilton‘s Daveed Diggs is starting his post-musical career with a guest starring stint on the hit ABC show – and PEOPLE has an exclusive first look at his role.

The Tony-winning actor is joining the cast of black-ish as Johan, Rainbow’s (Tracee Ellis Ross) brother who just got back to America after teaching for two years in France. Naturally, this makes him unable to say the word “croissant” without a French accent – and subsequently infuriating Andre (Anthony Anderson).

Johan may rub Dre the wrong way, but in real life the actors had a blast working together.

“We were shooting a scene in a car – and spending most of the day with Anthony Anderson in a car is a thing I will never forget,” Diggs told PEOPLE. “I haven’t taken a road trip with him, but this was like that.”

And Hamilton‘s favorite fighting Frenchman certainly needed high-energy moments like that to adjust to the TV world after being a part of such an electric show for more than a year.

“I was surprised at how relaxed the schedule was going from Hamilton on Broadway and having a sustained energy in theater – three hours at a time of intensity,” sys the Broadway star. “Going to TV it is about keeping things fresh and having a short burst of intensity over the course of a day.”

Black-ish airs Wednesdays at 9:30 p.m. ET on ABC.
