Grey’s Anatomy returns Thursday night! So what can fans expect from the winter premiere?

“We’ve got some serious stuff going on with [Dr. Meredith Grey] right when we get back,” Jerrika Hinton, who plays Dr. Stephanie Edwards, told PEOPLE.

“Some stuff that in a way makes it feel like, ‘Whoa! We’re doing this in the middle of the season? This feels like finale stuff.’ At the table read, we were all like, ‘What?!’ ” adds Hinton.

In a promo for the upcoming episode, which was directed by Denzel Washington, it’s revealed a patient brutally attacks Meredith – slamming her against a glass cabinet and throwing her onto a gurney.

Along with Meredith’s attack, Hinton says that Grey’s diehards can also expect to see what happens with Dr. Alex Karev’s marriage proposal to girlfriend Dr. Jo Wilson this season. (Will she accept?). And no surprise, Dr. Jackson Avery and Dr. April Kepner will continue to have relationship drama.

“[They are] dealing with their drama that they will perpetually have,” Hinton says with a laugh.

As for working with Washington, Hinton, 34, says it was “really wonderful.”

“Whenever you get to work with somebody that understands both sides of the craft – in front of and behind the camera – it’s a treat,” Hinton explains. “They understand what language to use.”

And with Washington’s notable film background, Hinton says, “We’re using some unusual shots and points of view.”

She teases, “I have a feeling that it’s is going to end up looking more cinematic than [the] show usually does.”

Grey’s Anatomy airs Thursdays (8 p.m. ET) on ABC.
