When Ginger Zee stepped off the ballroom floor after the Dancing with the Stars finale in May, she couldn’t wait to see how her third-place finish had impacted her body.

“I hadn’t weighed myself all season, but I knew my clothes fit better. I thought I’d be 20 lbs. lighter,” the Good Morning America meteorologist, 35, says in the current issue of PEOPLE. “But I only weighed 2 lbs. less. That was it!”

“It made me feel better that all those years when I thought, ‘If I just work out more, I’ll lose weight,’ I was wrong,” adds Zee, who welcomed son Adrian Benjamin with husband Ben Aaron in December. “Apparently I’m just supposed to be 138 lbs., and that’s good.”

And after her successful turn on DWTS – during which she also balanced her gigs on ABC’s GMA and World News Tonight with David Muir – the new mom says she’s seen changes in herself where they really count.

“Having a baby and then going into this challenge was really empowering,” says Zee, who launches her digital-first culinary science series Food Forecast on ABC.com in July and hopes to inspire young students through a children’s science show in the future. “I’ve found a pride in myself that I’d never had before.”
