George R.R. Martin knows what he's good at, and that's killing people off

The master of literary misery, the killer of your favorite characters, George R.R. Martin has offered up his services as a hired hit man.

As part of a campaign to raise money for Wild Spirit Wolf Sanctuary and The Food Depot of Santa Fe, the Game of Thrones author has come up with an interesting incentive. The first two donors to give $20,000 were guaranteed to have a character, who meets a grisly death, named after them in an upcoming Song of Fire and Ice novel.

Martin wasn’t planning on too many big donations, so he was shocked when the two $20,000 donations came within hours of the campaign being posted, according to The Hollywood Reporter. An additional eight $20,000 donors joined the waiting list shortly thereafter.

“The outpouring of love and support has been far greater than I could ever anticipate, and has left me astonished and at a loss for words,” Martin told The Hollywood Reporter.

One of the lucky recipients is Facebook employee Dave Goldblatt, who said it only took him ten minutes to decide to give the required sum. After making his donation to Martin’s Iron Bank of Braavos, Goldbatt was given the choice of what kind of GoT character he would like to be.

“I want to be a Valyrian if at all possible,” Goldblatt shared. “But [Martin] figures it out himself. I wouldn’t want to impinge upon his creative process.”

Also part of Martin’s creative process? How Goldblatt’s character will expire. Beheading? Poisoning? Moon door drop? The weapon of choice lies in the author’s hands.

“I actually find it hard to kill off characters that I’ve been writing about for some time. Good guys or bad guys, they’re all my children,” Martin shared. “But this time the slaughter should be easy, since the victims will be laying down their lives in a good cause. I will do my best to make their ends memorable.”

Other incentives for donating include: signed memorabilia, a hat worn by Martin and a chance to dine with the author. All participants are automatically enrolled in a chance to win a trip to Santa Fe to go on a helicopter ride with the writer through the Wild Spirit Wolf Sanctuary, including free time to ask Martin all those burning questions. (Where’s Ser Pounce?) Overall, the campaign is hoping to raise $500,000 to help the sanctuary protect the dwindling wolf population.

Fans who don’t want to wait until they win a grand prize to pose GoT queries to Martin now have the option of following him on Twitter. The 65-year-old joined the social network on Monday with this triumphant tweet.
