Ashley Hamilton was born into acting royalty, and with the glitz and glamour came a battle against substance abuse.

“Growing up as a kid in Hollywood, we had everything, but that comes with problems,” Ashley, 40, explains in an exclusive clip from his family’s new reality show, Stewarts & Hamiltons. “I went through a hard time with drugs and alcohol. So stupid.”

“There are about four times that we almost lost you in your life and you pulled through it,” his dad, Golden Globe-nominated movie star George Hamilton, responds.

Ashley also had eating disorders beginning in his teens.

“I suffered from bulimia and anorexia,” he revealed to PEOPLE in 2013. “I believe it was my problem before I got into drugs and alcohol. I used the drugs and alcohol to control the food addiction.”

On Stewarts & Hamiltons, George, 75, encourages his son to think of his second chance at life as “a real gain” as he works on new music and works at a rehab facility as a sober companion.

Then the A-list patriarch brings some humor to the emotional moment.

“I’m proud of you. Don’t think of it as a loss, it’s a real gain,” he says, adding, “I think I’m drunk!”

Stewarts & Hamiltons premieres Sunday at 9 p.m. ET on E!.
