“To always be put on a pedestal as a hunk is slightly demeaning,” Harington told Page Six Monday. “It really is, and it’s in the same way as it is for women. When an actor is seen only for her physical beauty it can be quite offensive.”
Here’s hoping, however, Harington, 28 – who stars as Jon Snow on HBO’s hit show – doesn’t mind being called sexy – he was named one of PEOPLE’s Sexiest Men Alive in 2014.
The actor, who is starring in the upcoming World War I film Testament of Youth, said he often feels as if his “art is being put to one side” for his sex appeal, adding emphatically, “And I don’t like that.”
“In this position you get asked a lot, ‘Do you like being a heartthrob? Do you like being a hunk?’ Well, my answer is, ‘That’s not what I got into it for.’ ”
Harington says he is like a lot like his GoT character in that “I can be just as introverted as Jon. I’m not naturally good at being an extrovert, being showy.”
Oh, and don’t ask the bachelor about his lustrous locks either.
“Yeah, it irritates me,” he told Page Six. “People become fascinated by very particular things, and I find that really interesting, whether it’s a catchphrase or someone’s hair.”
Continued Harington, “But I love that I seem to have brilliant hair. I suppose it’s a great thing in life, isn’t it?”
Yes, it is, considering PEOPLE also named him winner of Most Touchable Hair in its 2014 Emmy Awards for Hottest Guys, where Harington did act a wee bit hunkish on the red carpet, telling E!’s Giuliana Rancic, “I’ve got an addiction to skinny-dipping. I don’t know what it is, maybe I am a nudist at heart.”
Game of Thrones returns to HBO for a fifth season on April 12.
