Jason's Back, Again: 'Friday the 13th' May Soon Become a TV Show

Sean S. Cunningham, director of the original film, wants to bring Jason Voorhees to the small screen

If there’s one thing the Friday the 13th series has taught us, it’s that Jason Voorhees always pops up where you least expect him. But this time, he’s not appearing in a dark hallway or a spooky lake – instead, he’ll be on your TV set.

With American Horror Story and Hannibal pushing the limits of gore on television, it was only a matter of time before a canny producer decided to take a stab (sorry) at adapting one of cinema’s bloodiest series for the small screen.

According to Deadline, Sean S. Cunningham, the director of the 1980 film that kicked off the franchise, is developing a Friday the 13th TV series set at the infamous Camp Crystal Lake.

Unlike the Friday the 13th TV show that ran from 1987 to 1990, this version will reportedly center on the infamous masked murderer introduced in the series’s second film, before expanding its focus on the rest of his villainous family. (Jason’s mother was killed off at the end of the first film, but knowing the horror genre, her return is not unlikely.)

“Jason Voorhees is synonymous with the genre and we plan to build on this legacy with a provocative and compelling take that expands upon the story lines that have already thrilled millions worldwide,” Cunningham told Deadline.

There’s no word on a network yet, but you can bet a bevy of attractive 20-something actors are already practicing their final screams.
