Entertainment TV Why Matthew McConaughey Deserves the Emmy for 'True Detective' (VIDEO) Anyone who can deliver a line like "I can smell the psychosphere" with a straight face deserves the gold By People Staff Published on August 24, 2014 04:35PM EDT Share Tweet Pin Email Photo: Lacey Terrell/HBO WARNING: Video contains profanity Yield to the Era of McConaughey. You thought it was over with his Oscar win, didn’t you? Well, you thought wrong. It’s just getting started. McConaughey’s role as the masculinely-named (true) Detective Rusin Cohle doubled-down on the grimness of his appearances in films like The Paperboy and Killer Joe, and added a dose of surreal, philosophical weirdness, thanks to showrunner Nic Pizzolatto’s riffs on religion, nihilism and the psychosphere. Whether Young Cohle or Old Cohle is your favorite, it’s easy to agree that he’s at his best delivering stream-of-consciousness rants, either to a befuddled Martin Hart (Woody Harrelson) in the ’90s, or the detectives interrogating him in the present day. Continue the McConaughaissance. Surrender your Emmy to him, Academy. You won’t be disappointed. [IMAGE Want more stories like this?
