Dr. Jeff Young is used to making big decisions in the operating room, but his most serious decisions lately have been more personal than professional.

In an exclusive sneak peek at Saturday’s Dr. Jeff: Rocky Mountain Vet, Young’s wife, Petra, cuts his famous long locks to prepare him for cancer treatments.

“I’d rather lose my hair than lose my life,” says Young, adding that he sometimes makes light of the situation since he has “no control” over it.

The whole office, including the Youngs’ daughter, watches as Petra tenderly cuts and then shaves his head.

Petra then kneels in front of her husband and gives him a sweet kiss.

“My dad’s had long shaggy hair since as far as I’ve known – forever. He’s always said his hair’s his strength,” his daughter says through tears. “Then he shaved it off.”

It’s clear Animal Planet’s rock star vet has an incredible group of support around him that helps him stay positive in the face of adversity. He even hugs one employee and assures her, “Don’t worry ’bout me, I’ll do all right.”

He continues, “I feel like I’ve been blessed. I’ve stood on lots of mountain tops and scuba dived in lots of oceans and taught hundreds of veterinarians. Who can complain?”

He sums up, “My hair will grow back, it’s a small price to pay.”
