David Letterman has made plenty of political jokes in his day, but the former Late Show host is getting serious about presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump.

“I understand that he’s repugnant to people,” Letterman tells Tom Brokaw in a candid interview for Dateline NBC’s On Assignment.

He continues, “The men putting together the Constitution, witnessing this election, wouldn’t they have just said, ‘That’s part of the way we set it up. Good luck’?”

Despite that objectively neutral first statement, Letterman, 69, then sheds some light on his personal opinion: “There’s nothing illegal going on. It’s just he’s despicable.”

As the comic and Brokaw, 76, stroll a college campus Letterman notes, “And in this very school and everybody s school, you hear ‘the great thing about America is anybody can grow up to be President.’ Ooh, jeez.”

He adds with a laugh: “I guess that might be true.”

Letterman’s interview with Tom Brokaw airs on Dateline NBC’s On Assignment this Sunday at 7 p.m. ET.
