Dominic Sherwood – aka the hottie romancing Taylor Swift in her “Style” music video – is about to get a lot more screen time.

The actor has been cast as lead character Jace in ABC Family’s upcoming Shadowhunters series, the network announced Monday.

You’ll also recognize him as Sarah Hyland‘s arm candy: The actors were first linked in February and have taken their PDA everywhere from basketball games to Coachella.

Sherwood, 25, is no stranger to fantasy: He starred in the 2014 movie Vampire Academy alongside Hyland, 24.

Based on Cassandra Clare’s bestselling The Mortal Instruments books, Shadowhunters tells the story of teen Clary Fray, who discovers she’s part of a long line of half-human, half-angel demon fighters. Jace is Clary’s love interest, though (spoiler alert!) they go through a rough patch after being tricked into thinking they’re secret siblings.

The YA novels were originally developed as a film franchise starring Lily Collins as Clary and Jamie Campbell Bower as Jace, but the first installment, The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones, tanked at the box office.

Shadowhunters will be produced by McG, known for helping turn teen shows The O.C. and Supernatural into hits; he’s also directing the first episode. The series will begin production in Toronto in early May and premiere in early 2016, an ABC Family rep tells PEOPLE.
