Demi Lovato is taking no prisoners on the From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series finale.

The star returns for the show’s season 2 finale after making her debut in Tuesday’s episode, and PEOPLE has the exclusive first look at her in action.

In an exclusive featurette, the creators of the El Rey Network show reveal the inspiration behind her deadly character, Maia.

“It gave us the opportunity to tell the story about a different kind of incredibly strong woman,” says executive producer Diego Gutierrez, who cites Santénico (Eiza Gonzélez) and Kate (Madison Davenport) as other tough women on the show. “Maia brought a whole new color to the show. Not just the character, but obviously the way Demi played it.”

Lovato’s character will be clashing with alpha female Santénico, over her relationship with Carlos (Lovato’s real-life boyfriend Wilmer Valderrama).

“She will stand up to the queen at the end of the day, simply because she is devoted to her man,” says Gutierrez.

The producers say they expanded the character’s role after Lovato signed on, as the part was initially conceived as a smaller one.

“When an actress of that caliber wants to do your part, you search for ways to really honor that part,” says executive producer Carlos Coto.

The season 2 finale of From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series airs Tuesday at 9 p.m. ET on El Rey Network.
