Dean McDermott says he and Tori Spelling have finally arrived at a good place in their relationship – after a lot of heartache, much of which was made public on their reality show, True Tori, they’re doing “awesome,” he says.

“[Tragedy] and going through bad things, sometimes it can really help and it really did, it really made us look at what was going on with our relationship and we took a lot of great stuff away from a horrible, horrible experience and our relationship is solid,” the actor and chef, 48, told Extra while promoting his new cookbook, The Gourmet Dad: One Dish Two Ways.

The stars worked through issues surrounding McDermott’s infidelity and substance abuse on their show, but the father of five has said he doesn’t want to do reality TV anymore.

“What we went through publicly, I learned a lot, I wouldn’t do it again, at the end of the day we’re together, we’re happy and we’re working on our relationship and we have a beautiful family and a beautiful life,” he said. “It all worked out in the end.”

McDermott also says that his wife’s burns – from falling on a grill at a Benihana restaurant – are healing, though her right arm needed skin grafts.

“She’s recovering doing pretty good, at home resting,” he said.
