The Hot Pursuit star said that she gave birth to Ava the same year she made her first appearance on the Late Show

Well, she did star in Legally Blonde.

Reese Witherspoon took a minute to catch onto David Letterman‘s joke when she appeared on the Late Show on Tuesday night.

The talk -how host was marveling at a sweet pic the Hot Pursuit star had shared on Instagram of her look-alike 15-year-old daughter, Ava, when the star revealed that Ava “was born the first year I was on this show.”

That prompted some awkward throat clearing from Letterman, who said, “Well, that’s an interesting coincidence,” as the audience laughed.

It took a second for the penny to drop for Witherspoon, who suddenly yelped over the insinuation that Letterman could be her baby daddy: “Oh, my God! No, no, no!”

“I was having a blonde moment,” she explained. “I have a lot of them lately.”

Witherspoon then talked a little more about her teenager, whose father is her ex-husband Ryan Phillippe.

“She hasn’t mentioned wanting to be an actress,” said Witherspoon, 39. “She’s very artistic though. She’s sort of a songwriter and she paints. She’s wonderful.”

“Behavioral problems?” Letterman wanted to know. “Does she run with the wrong crowd?”

“Not yet,” the mom of three replied. “No smoking or drinking.”
