The Shakespearian-trained Escobar appeared in countless TV shows and movies

Actor Daniel Escobar, best known for his role as a teacher opposite Hilary Duff on Disney Channel’s Lizzie McGuire, died Friday. He was 49.

Escobar passed away of complications from diabetes at a hospital in Los Angeles, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The Shakespearian-trained actor played Lizzie McGuire’s teacher, Mr. Escobar, from 2001–2002.

Escobar appeared in countless TV shows, including a recurring role on Dharma & Greg as well as appearances on Weeds, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Malcolm in the Middle, Two and a Half Men and How I Met Your Mother. His film credits included Blow, The Mexican and The Lizzie McGuire Movie.

The actor also won a Helen Hayes Award in 2008 for his role in the Woolly Mammoth Theater Company’s production of David Greenspan’s She Stoops to Comedy.
