The ABC reality dance competition series is "definitely" coming back on the air
Dancing with the Stars is coming back to the ballroom.
During the Television Critics Association Winter Press Tour on Tuesday, ABC Entertainment president Karey Burke announced that the reality dance competition series will be returning for season 28.
“I can confirm that it will definitely be returning in the fall,” Burke told reporters.
Although DWTS has occasionally aired two seasons annually — spring and fall — PEOPLE confirmed in December that the long-running ABC show would be taking a hiatus and skipping a spring cycle like 2018’s Athletes mini-season.
On the season 27 finale, audiences watched radio personality Bobby Bones and pro partner Sharna Burgess take home the coveted Mirrorball Trophy over fellow finalists Alexis Ren and Alan Bersten, Milo Manheim and Witney Carson, and Evanna Lynch and Keo Motsepe.
Bones, 38, himself was surprised to be named champion. Reflecting on his win in November, Bones told reporters that he was “in shock” about taking home the trophy, adding, “I apologized so many times to [Sharna] for getting stuck with me because she’s so good and talented. … It didn’t make sense, but she stuck with me.”
Over the weekend, PEOPLE exclusively reported that Burgess, 33, will be taking her dancing talents back home Down Under.
She will be join the Australian version of the reality dancing competition series as its sole female judge, which premieres Feb. 18.
“Having been a pro on America’s Dancing with the Stars for the last 12 seasons, I am so excited to be coming home to bring my knowledge and passion from the U.S. to this stellar line up of Aussie talent!” the Australia native said in a statement about joining Australia’s Dancing with the Stars. “I can’t wait to see what these amazing dancers have in store for us all.”
Although Burgess will be returning to her homeland for her new role as judge, this isn’t goodbye to the United States’ version of the show. PEOPLE confirmed that Burgess will return for season 28.
Season 28 of Dancing with the Stars will premiere this fall on ABC.
