The model put on a green prosthetic to channel Jim Carrey in The Mask, and while the performance pleased the crowd, some of the judges took issue with comments he made during the episode.
At one point he called himself the “frontrunner” in the video package and after the performance joked that since you couldn’t tell who he was with the prosthetic, maybe it was a “pro dancer” actually under the mask. He earned 25 out of 30, and Len Goodman remarked on those comments.
“You’re a good dancer, but don’t start saying, ‘I’m as good as Val [Chmerkovskiy],’ because you’re just annoying people. That’s ridiculous,” said Goodman, going on to soften the blow by adding, “You never cease to amaze me and a great performance.”
DiMarco, 26, took his lumps gracefully, including criticism of his technique.
“I think it’s fair criticism. The quickstep is very fast and it’s a lot for me to handle,” said DiMarco. “I definitely understand. I accept all of the criticism and I’ll get better.”
In his exclusive PEOPLE vlog, DiMarco opened up about about his love of the 1994 film.
“Growing up, I watched the mask probably over 100 times. I love Jim Carrey,” said DiMarco, who calls the comedy a “masterpiece.”
