Learning a dance in a week isn’t easy, but now Mark Ballas and Paige VanZant know what it’s like to learn one in even less.

“We lost days of rehearsal,” Ballas told PEOPLE after Monday night’s episode of Dancing with the Stars. “About two and a half days.”

For Famous Dances Night on the ABC reality dance competition, Ballas had been planning a routine that had to be scrapped last Wednesday because the show was not able to obtain the necessary rights.

“I put in so much preparation, but we had it yanked. So we couldn’t even start our rehearsals until Thursday,” explained Ballas, 29, of having to switch to an Austin Powers-inspired routine.

Making things more difficult was having to move rehearsals to Las Vegas on Friday because of VanZant’s schedule.

“We only had an hour and a half to rehearse with the [background] dancers here in Los Angeles before we had to go to Vegas,” said Ballas. “The other dancers would take videos of their rehearsals and send them to me and I would call them to let them know what to clean up.”

That meant Ballas and VanZant, 22, were working up until the last minute going into Monday’s episode.

“We were down to the wire,” said Ballas. “We didn’t finish the dance until Sunday night.”

But all of the rushed hard work paid off when the judges awarded the couple a 28 out of possible 30 for the routine.

“We had a blast out there,” VanZant told PEOPLE. “It was a lot of fun.”

Dancing with the Stars airs Mondays (8 p.m. ET) on ABC.
