Derek Hough may not be singing in the rain this fall, but he will still be dancing with the stars.

PEOPLE reported Friday that the longtime Dancing with the Stars pro would be returning to the ABC reality dance competition, but now Hough has formally announced he will be back in the ballroom for season 23.

“I’m a firm believer that everything happens for a reason. This fall, I was planning on being immersed in rehearsals for Singin’ in the Rain on Broadway, but due to successes of the shows currently running, that project has been delayed because there simply isn’t a theatre available,” Hough posted on his Facebook page Monday.

The dancer says that the stage production
“is still very much part of my future plans,” but “with my fall schedule freeing up I’m excited to say that I’ll be back on Dancing with the Stars.”

Hough became a fan favorite over his 16 seasons as a professional dancer on the show, but had took a season off after winning his sixth Mirrorball Trophy when he competed with Bindi Irwin on season 21 last year.

“It’s always great to be back with my DWTS family, coaching, creating and making lasting memories,” says Hough, who will also star as TV host Corny Collins in NBC’s Hairspray Live! in December. “I’m grateful to everyone at Hairspray LIVE for enabling me to do double duty on two major productions at the same time this fall. It’s going to be a challenge that I’m looking forward to.”

PEOPLE has confirmed that Hough will be joined on season 23 by his sister Julianne Hough as a returning judge and Olympian Ryan Lochte and Little Women: LA star Terra Jolé will compete as stars.

It was previously announced on GMA that pro dancers Maksim and Valentin Chmerkovskiy, Witney Carson, Sharna Burgess, Artem Chigvintsev, Lindsay Arnold, Sasha Farber, Allison Holker and Gleb Savchenko will be returning for season 23.

Dancing with the Stars is slated to return Sept. 12 on ABC.
