Things got a little emotional for Bindi Irwin on Dancing with the Stars on Monday night’s show.

After performing a well-reviewed tango to AC/DC’s “You Shook Me,” the daughter of the late Steve Irwin was visibly moved as she recalled her father’s love of the band’s music.

“Sometimes you just need a moment,” Irwin, 17, tells PEOPLE of letting the emotions out after her performance. “I think I was just so excited because the song means so much to me. That just hit me. There are so many memories attached to that song.”

And the emotion apparently helped Irwin on the dance floor. With a score of 25 out of 30, she and partner Derek Hough finished the night in first place.

“I’m so happy I was able to do this song for my dad and for everyone back home at Australia Zoo,” says Irwin.

Irwin and Hough will dance again Tuesday night (9 p.m. ET on ABC) before another contestant is sent home from the competition.
