And the Chmerkovskiy brothers are off!

Dancing with the Stars pros Maksim Chmerkovskiy, 36, and Valentin Chmerkovskiy, 30, began rehearsing for the hit ABC competition reality show’s upcoming 23rd season this week. And judging from Instagram videos they each posted of their early practice sessions, it looks like the rival Chmerkovskiys might be off to an early lead.

Maks and partner Amber Rose elegantly twirl around the studio – in a dance scored to Alessia Cara‘s hit “Here.” The couple’s first routine looks like it will be a Viennese waltz, but don’t be surprised if the bad boy of ballroom switches things up later on.

The 32-year-old talk show host‘s posture and footwork are on-point for most of the sequence before Maks corrects her final move. They then start again from the top.

“Better push through,” Maks captioned the Instagram video.

Olympic gymnast Laurie Hernandez and Val were a little more jovial in their video.

After spinning the 16-year-old gold medalist in what also looks like a waltz, Val joins Hernandez for a laughter-inducing victory handshake – complete with high fives and bright smiles.

“Still need a lot of work on the frame,” he wrote in the caption of his post. “But ‘eyyyyy we already got a handshake.”

“So excited for the season. Helping this incredible girl reach her ballroom dreams. She’s is a real gem,” he continued.

While their moves look good now, the two duos will have tough competition this season.

They’ll be competing against stars like Ryan Lochte, Marilu Henner, Vanilla Ice and Terra Jolé.

Plus, Mirrorball Trophy-winning pros Derek Hough and Cheryl Burke are both returning from an absence from the show – ready to reclaim its top prize.

Of course, the Chmerkovskiys know a thing or two about winning themselves.

Maks won season 18 alongside partner Meryl Davis, and Val was season 20’s champion alongside Rumer Willis.

Dancing with the Stars returns Sept. 12 at 8 p.m. ET on ABC.
