Laurie Hernandez landed Dancing with the Stars' first perfect score of season 23

Laurie Hernandez may have gotten season 23’s first perfect score on Dancing with the Stars, but that doesn’t mean her time on the show has been entirely without obstacle.

In an exclusive sneak peek at Monday’s episode — which is also this season’s Latin Night — Hernandez, 16, gets some valuable tips from former Olympian gold medalists (and DWTS competitors) Nastia Liukin and Shawn Johnson.

The three women, who are currently on a gymnastics tour together, are enjoying some downtime on the bus when Johnson — who won season 8 of DWTS in 2009 — recalls a time during her own stint on the show when she locked herself in the bathroom and starting crying.

“I did that last week!” says Hernandez.

“I freaked out,” confesses Johnson, 24. “‘Cause [my partner Mark Ballas] told I had to be ‘sexy’ and whatever, and I was like: ‘Uh-uh!’ and I started crying.”

Hernandez admits there have been times where she feels similarly uncomfortable.

“It’s weird having to like, shake my hips in front of Val [Chmerkovskiy],” says Hernandez. “‘Cause he’s like, a guy!”

“I really feel for Laurie and how she’s feeling this week,” Johnson tells the camera. “I was in her shoes, I went through it all. It’s a really hard thing transitioning from gymnastics. We’re so used to being strict, and it can be awkward.”

But ultimately, Johnson just had one piece of advice for her fellow gymnast.

“This is time to have fun, learn a new thing and kind of prove to yourself that you can be more than just a gymnast,” she says. “We can make mistakes!”

Dancing with the Stars airs Mondays (8 p.m. ET) on ABC.
