Courteney Cox‘s Dirt didn’t make a clean sweep of the ratings.

The FX drama, with the former Friends star as a tenacious tabloid editor, averaged 1.7 million total viewers at 10 p.m. Sunday for its second-season debut. That’s a 54 percent drop from the 3.7 million who watched the January 2007 series premiere, says the Hollywood Reporter, relaying on numbers supplied by Nielsen Media Research.

A year ago, the series’ first-season finale, boasting a much-hyped kiss between Cox and her former sitcom costar Jennifer Aniston, attracted 2.4 million total viewers. Overall, the first season’s 13 episodes averaged 1.9 million.

This season will feature only seven Dirt episodes, owing to the just-resolved Hollywood writers’ strike. –Stephen M. SilvermanMichael Becker/FX
