Kerry Washington is back in the nation’s capital for her next project – but she won’t be playing Olivia Pope.

The Scandal star is stepping into the shoes of Anita Hill in HBO’s Confirmation, and PEOPLE has the exclusive trailer for the film about the 1991 sexual harassment scandal that rocked Washington, D.C. – and the country.

Confirmation centers on the controversial confirmation hearing of Supreme Court nominee Clarence Thomas (Wendell Pierce), with Washington playing Hill, the university professor who accused Thomas of sexual harassment.

The trailer features Hill being put under intense scrutiny from the media and elected officials, who ask why she’s coming forward now – and why she took so long to break her silence.

“I had to tell the truth,” Washington’s Hill says.

The real-life confirmation hearing was televised to an estimated 30 million households.

In addition to Washington, the film also stars Greg Kinnear, Jennifer Hudson, Modern Family‘s Eric Stonestreet, Boardwalk Empire‘s Jeffrey Wright and The Americans‘ Alison Wright.

Confirmation premieres April 16 at 8 p.m ET on HBO.
