The Voice is shaking things up this season – and they have a big name helping them out: Chris Martin.

Starting March 31, the Coldplay frontman will appear as an advisor for all of the four judges’ teams as the competition goes into its second round of head-to-head singing battles.

In the clip below, which was first broadcast on Access Hollywood, he stops in to counsel Team Shakira.

Martin – who shot his three episodes prior to the announcement of his and wife Gwyneth Paltrow‘s separation – gives the contestants some sage advice, amping up their performance with a little showmanship trick.

“I think sometimes people needs props,” says Martin. “Bono has his sunglasses. Mick has his arms. Jay Z has his hat. And I felt like Patrick and Josh needed mic stands.”

The addition proved to be a game-changer for the two men, who turned up the voltage on their rendition of Bryan Adams’s “Run To You.”

In another clip, he works on the performances of Blake Shelton‘s dueling female singers, Audra and Megan. “Cover your area,” he told them, reminding them to work the stage so they connect with the audience. “The more you feel like you’re being sung to, the more that will work.”

What will he have in store for Team Usher and Team Adam Levine? Find out on Monday (8 p.m. ET) when the first of his three episodes airs (he’ll also appear on the April 1 and April 7 shows) on NBC.
