His American Idol story didn’t quite go as planned, but now Chris Daughtry is returning to Fox with a different kind of script in hand.

The rocker, 35, who finished fourth on Season 5 of Idol back in 2006, has landed a recurring role on the hourlong dramedy series Studio City, Variety reports.

He will play a drug-addicted rock star and will write original music for the series.

Daughtry shrugged off his Idol disappointment to launch a stellar music career with his band Daughtry – and now ranks third in record sales among Idol alums, behind Season 4 winner Carrie Underwood and Season 1 winner Kelly Clarkson.

He’s also tried acting before, having appeared on the 100th episode of CSI: NY in 2008.

Fox has tapped another of its reality-show alums for Studio City, too. Jeanine Mason, who won Season 5 of So You Think You Can Dance, will also have a recurring role, per Variety.

Will & Grace‘s Eric McCormack will be the main star of Studio City, which will premiere this fall.
