Dancing with the Stars: Cher to Cheer on Chaz Bono
"It will be a real family affair," Bono says
When you’re the child of one of the most famous celebrities in the world, it’s glaringly obvious when your mother – in Chaz Bono’s case, Cher – is not present when you are hoofing your heart out on Dancing with the Stars.
However, that’s all about to change Monday night, Bono tells PEOPLE.
Last week, she texted me right before Monday’s show and said, ‘I wanted people to be able to feel your presence and not take away from that and I think you ve made your presence known now,’ ” Bono, 42, says.
“So I texted her back and I said, ‘Okay, so if I make it through this week that means you’ll come to Monday’s show?’ And she said, ‘Yes.’ ”
Despite having the lowest score last week, Bono and partner Lacey Schwimmer were buoyed by the fan vote and advanced to week four of the competition. That means Cher will indeed have a reserved seat to see her son perform the paso doble.
“It’s very exciting,” Bono says, noting that “my mom and my stepmom Mary Bono Mack are coming, along with my aunt and uncle and my brother. It will be a real family affair.”
Though this will be Cher’s first trip to the ballroom, Bono says his mom has been “incredibly supportive” of him doing the show.
When the aches and pains of rehearsals were wreaking havoc on his knee, “she sent her acupuncturist and physical therapist over and that really helped me heal faster.” And, he adds, “She’s voting!”
“Dancing in front of 20 million people on live TV is nerve-wracking,” says Bono. But dancing in front of his mother? Not so scary, he says.
“The pressure of wanting to do good for all the people who are supporting me is so much more intense for me than having my family in the audience rooting for me,” Bono says. “It should be a very fun night.”
